Dif-dif Kehormat; Tuan-tuan dan Puan-puan sekalian; Saya mengucapkan
terima kasih kerana dijemput dan diberi peluang pada hari ini untuk
bersama-sama dengan tuan-tuan dan puan-puan di perhimpunan ini.

2. Saya biasa melihat perwakilan-perwakilan bersatu-padu di dalam dewan
ini bagi memperjuangkan isu-isu politik atau yang bersangkut-paut dengan
kepentingan negara. Pada hari ini perbezaannya ialah perhimpunan ini
adalah bagi tujuan kepentingan perusahaan tuan-tuan dan puan-puan
sekalian.

3. Saya berasa gembira kerana perhimpunan pada kali ini merupakan
perhimpunan yang terdiri daripada para peniaga kecil-kecilan. Perdagangan
dan kemewahan negara pada mulanya diterokai oleh para pengusaha asing yang
telah datang ke negara ini serta mendapat berbagai-bagai peluang kerana
bumi ini mempunyai sumber-sumber asli yang begitu banyak sekali. Kerana
ini jugalah kita telah menikmati pembangunan yang pesat dan berbagai-bagai
kemewahan. Malangnya hari ini kita mengalami kemelesetan ekonomi akibat
tindakan dan tekanan di luar dari kuasa kita. Pada masa-masa yang lalu
kita telah bergantung kepada bahan-bahan komoditi yang kita keluarkan
dengan begitu lumayan, tetapi dengan turunnya harga-harga bahan komoditi
sekarang ini dengan begitu mendadak, kita perlulah menyesuaikan diri
dengan keadaan ini. Kita haruslah menumpukan perhatian yang lebih kepada
bidang pembuatan dan perdagangan.

4. Kita sekarang mesti berbalik kepada inisiatif diri sendiri. Oleh yang
demikian, kita mestilah membangunkan semula semangat
keusahawanan. Semangat keusahawanan ini terdapat bukan sahaja di kalangan
sektor korporat tetapi juga di kalangan peniaga-peniaga kecil. Sebenarnya,
kebanyakan daripada syarikat-syarikat besar yang maju pada hari ini
bermula dengan berniaga secara kecil-kecilan, di bina atas semangat daya
inisiatif pengusaha-pengusaha kecil yang telah mengasaskannya. Sebenarnya,
pengusaha-pengusaha kecil-kecilan inilah, kerana semangat dan usaha gigih
mereka, sekarang menjadi usahawan-usahawan yang berjaya.

Ladies and Gentlemen, 

5. Today is the Tenth Anniversary of your establishment in this
country. Your presence today is proof of your resilience in facing the
current recessionary challenges. It requires commitment in order to
overcome the difficulties of this prolonged economic slowdown. It entails
sacrifices, the willingness to increase productivity, and the ability to
develop resilience so as to create opportunities out of this bad times.

6. This recession should be seen as a challenge and as an opportunity to
appraise our performance thus far. This is the time for corrective
measures. We should not despair over this prolonged economic slowdown
because it is a phenomenon that is faced by many developing and even some
developed countries. We have not fared that badly when compared to many
other countries.

7. The Government on its part for the past few years had taken stringent
measures both fiscal and monetary, to lessen the impact of the
recession. We have taken measures to stimulate the manufacturing, tourism
and agricultural sectors. The Government is also encouraging increased
private sector participation both domestic and foreign in order to boost
the economy.

Ladies and Gentlemen, 

8. I am glad Selangor Pewter has won a coveted place in the Amway
Catalogue in the United States. This is one Malaysian product that has met
the standards of this, the biggest and most sophisticated of consumer
markets. I hope this will prove to be a breakthrough for Selangor Pewter
to establish itself in the American market and possibly later pave the way
for more Malaysian products. I also hope that other goods of Malaysian
manufacture will find their way into the catalogue of goods marketed
through the Amway net work world wide. That way Amway will not only
benefit foreign manufacturers but will balance the outflow of foreign
exchange from Malaysia.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

9. We live in trying times but wherever we live it is the wholesome values
of family life, good neighbourliness, self discipline, hard work, and
devotion to our country that will see us through. These are the values
that will help us to overcome our present difficulties and to ensure
success.
